Byway Activity Levels
A key element of the National Scenic Byway Program is its emphasis on management of the byway corridor to protect and promote the resources and intrinsic qualities along the route. This process begins with the preparation of a corridor management plan and continues with the implementation of actions identified in the CMP.
One way to measure the continuing activity of a byway is to look at the number of projects funded under the National Scenic Byways Program. Figure 3 presents the median number of funded projects per byway, grouped by year of byway designation and increasing age of the byway (i.e., 0-3 years, 4-6 years and 7-9 years after designation as a byway). It is interesting to note that byways that have been designated more recently seem to have a higher level of project activity, both in the early years after designation and as the byway matures.
