Flint Hills Scenic Byway recently acquired four new monument welcome signs. According to Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Deb Miller, the signs are intended to celebrate and promote the byway.
“The new welcome signs will help the millions of travelers who pass through this area get a sense of the magnitude of the land they are crossing,” Miller said at an event held on Tuesday morning, Nov. 6th.
The signs are made of native limestone, one of the byway’s most prominent natural characteristics. Each of them is 25 feet wide, nine feet high and weighs 30 tons. Travelers can catch a glimpse at the following places: on I-70 near Maple Hill and Junction City and on the Kansas Turnpike near Emporia and Cassoday.
