Popular Kansas Scenic Byways Booklets Win Two Awards

November 20, 2003

Did you know cows usually chew their cuds six to eight hours a day, sleep four hours and spend the rest of the time grazing? The Kansas Scenic Byways Program’s Farms and Ranch Fun Facts Booklet describes how cattle spend their day and provides other fun information about what motorists see on farms and ranches along Kansas Scenic Byways.

In October 2003, The Farm and Ranch Booklet, along with two other Fun Facts booklets, received two awards from the Travel Industry Association of Kansas at its annual conference in Olathe, KS: 1) for booklets produced within the $15,000 and over budget category; and 2) the People’s Choice Award based on balloting of those in attendance at the conference.

Debbie Divine, Program Manager, received the awards on behalf of the program. She indicated the booklets are the product of input from many Kansas experts. The booklets are intended to provide basic information in an enjoyable way about what people see as they drive the Byways; to enhance their experience and appreciation of Kansas scenery. The booklets are popular with school teachers as well as travelers because they make learning fun.

The other two booklets are about Trees, Grasses, Wildflowers and Shrubs, and about Birds and Wildlife. Did you know that hummingbirds have only 1,000 feathers and swans more than 25,000? Or did you know there are nearly 250 different species of grass in Kansas?
