The Federal Highway Administration’s biennial awards program rewarding Environmental Excellence has released the Call for Entries. This program, which was started in 1995, recognizes those outstanding transportation projects, processes, and people who incorporate environmental stewardship into the planning and development stages of a transportation project. This program is our commitment to honor our partners who take the extra effort to achieve environmental excellence. The entry form for nominations is now available on the FHWA’s website listed below.
Three new categories have been added to the 2001 Environmental Excellence Awards Program. The categories will recognize contributions to enhance the environment in the following areas: Environmental Streamlining, Environmental Research, Environmental Leadership, Wetlands, Water Quality & Ecosystems, Nonmotorized Transportation, Cultural Resources, Vegetation Management, Noise Abatement, Air Quality Improvement, Livable Communities, Scenic Byways and Recycling. These winners will be announced at the 2001 Earth Day Celebration in Washington, D.C.
The Scenic Byways categories are as follows:
- Protects or enhances one or more byway intrinsic qualities: archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, scenic
- Provides a unique travel experience through the interpretation of a byway’s intrinsic qualities
- Balances the preservation, protection and promotion of a byway’s intrinsic qualities
- Enhances the quality of life for local citizens along the byway
- Demonstrates “best practices” that the national byway community can implement
- Reflects leadership of byway organizations and local communities
