Example 2 (Development of a Scenic Byways Program):
Abstract/Project Description
Good example of an Abstract/Project Description:
This project will help plan, design and develop an Indian scenic byway program called the Osage Nation Heritage Trail. The project includes defining the boundaries of the byway, developing a vision statement and goals, producing base maps for the inventory, a detailed resource inventory, an Interpretative Master Plan, a Corridor Management Plan and a phased strategic plan for the development of physical facilities and traveler related media. Other project elements include citizen participation meetings, professional photography, and the color printing of summary brochures.
This project benefits the byway traveler by providing a heightened awareness of the landscape and the history of the Osage and other cultures. The Osages were the only tribe to purchase their final homeland and they chose the Osage Reservation for its symmetry to their original homelands, the woodlands, the water flows, and the plains. The power of the natural resources, the bluestem prairie grass, the abundance of water and the oil deposits drew other cultures; cowboys, ranchers, and the oil patch to their land. After 100 years, the Reservation remains "pristine", with clean air, open sky, and vast prairies and the Osage culture remains intact carrying on the traditions of their ancestors.
This is a good example because it:
- Succinctly details the development of a program
- Describes what the benefit to the byway traveler will be
- Provides a very short yet compelling description of the history of the area, its resources and its peoples
