Good Example of a Prior Projects Summary:
The work to be pursued with this grant is directly related to the corridor management and multi-year work plans developed by San Juan Skyway stakeholders. A 1997 National Scenic Byway grant helped launch:
Phase 1 - The Red Mountain Project. Since 1998, $15 million has been raised and used to protect 9000+ acres, preserve 26 historic sites, and construct an interpretive overlook on Red Mountain Pass.
Phase 2 - San Juan Skyway Land Conservation and Recreation Initiative. Since 2004, $16 million has been raised and used to renovate the spectacular 130-acre Molas Lake Park; construct a bridge and key trail segment on the Galloping Goose rails-to-trails network; and secure easements on 2500 acres of threatened high resource value lands.
Phase 3 - This grant request is a key component of regional efforts to protect high priority San Juan Skyway resources. It also represents the final phase of protecting the 416-acre Truelsen Ranch, which had 316 acres protected with financial assistance from 2005 (SB-2005-CO-9, $100,000) and 2007 (SB-2007-CO-4) National Scenic Byway grants and matching funds.
The byway traveler will benefit from the above project as the Skyway's All-American Road intrinsic qualities of mountain ranch lands, natural areas, wildlife habitat, scenic vistas and access to public lands/recreation will be protected. Corridor management planning identified this ranch within an unzoned area of Montezuma County. It is a high priority for protection in order to help preserve the very qualities that led to the Skyway's All-American Road designation. This property is a model of what byway travelers expect to experience in the mountains and river valleys of Colorado. The protection of this ranch will also preserve two trailheads that are used to access recreation opportunities on the adjacent San Juan National Forest, Rio Lado Creek and Dolores River.
This is a good example because it:
- Succinctly summarizes prior project work and how the proposed project will augment the work already undertaken and leverage additional funding
- Includes the specific NSBP project numbers and award amounts
- Establishes a clear tie to the byway's corridor management plan
- Clearly establishes the project's relationship to the byway and its intrinsic qualities
- Describes what the benefit of the project to the byway traveler will be
