Good Example of a Narrative/Project Summary:
This project will fund the design, the development, and the construction of trailblazing/wayfinding signs, interpretive panels, kiosks and associated construction materials where they are needed for traveler information. Each byway committee has outlined in its respective corridor management plan, the key sites along the byway corridor which need interpretation and/or information for the byway traveler. Graphic designers will be hired to design the information boards and interpretive panels. They will work directly with key byway committee members to obtain the necessary information to develop the interpretives. BLM staff will design interpretives for the Owyhee Uplands Back Country Byway.
Construction of most of the signs, information boards, and panels will take place at the Idaho Transportation (ITD) Department's sign shop. To support the scenic byway sign program ITD has purchased a Roland Digital Printer with the latest technology and is able to produce the most brilliant colors available. The on-site construction set-up of signs, signboards, and interpretive panels will be done by ITD personnel if the byway is on a state highway. If the signs, interpretive panels, and kiosks are off the state highway system, on-site construction will be done by either BLM staff where appropriate, highway district personnel, county personnel, or byway committee organizers.
The designs will have a cohesive and uniform appearance to mirror Idaho Transportation Department's "Taking the Scenic Route: A Guide to Idaho's Byways" and the website http://www.idahobyways.gov.
Although trailblazer signs exist for most of the byways, wayfinding or directional signing for interpretive sites do not. Also byways that have been recently established or have recently been extended do not have trailblazing signs on the extended portions. Byway interpretives and other related signage for this project are listed as follows:
- Owyhee Uplands BCB six interpretive panels.
- Oregon Trail-Bear Lake SB Interpretive Sign Implementation at 17 sites including wayfinding, kiosks and interpretive tilt-backs.
- International Selkirk Loop (Idaho) Wayfinding Signage only.
- Northwest Passage SB - five, 3-sided Kiosks/Wayfinding Signage.
- Fort Henry HB/Lost Gold Trails Loop-Camas Meadows Battle Site Interpretive kiosk, and wayfinding.
- Salmon River SB-Clayton Kiosk and Livery Stable Interpretive. This town has a rich mining history which is integral to the byway story.
- Western Heritage HB- Interpretive tilt-back panels for Initial Point, Snake River Canyon, and Swan Falls Dam Powerhouse.
- Sacajawea HB-Birch Creek Kiosk and Interpretive Panels.
- Snake River Canyon SB- Interpretive Panels and wayfinding signs.
- Teton Scenic Byway- Interpretive panels and tilt-back interpretives.
- Payette River Scenic Byway- New Meadows Old Firehouse Interpretive Kiosk.
- St. Joe River and White Pine Scenic Byways- Kiosk and interpretives.
These projects are outlined in the corridor management plans for these byways or have been determined by the byway committees as high priority projects. The Owyhee Uplands interpretives were determined a priority by the BLM.
Maintenance of all interpretives are the responsibility of the respective partners that sign the state-local agreements for these projects. This arrangement has worked well for the last 5 years for previous interpretive projects.
By providing the byway traveler with information and interpretation, the byway experience is enhanced for the traveler, both for the educational value and, hopefully, to instill a greater appreciation for those intrinsic qualities of the byway itself. Wayfinding signage will assist the byway traveler to stay on the planned route. Information boards at various points along the byways provide a 'global' picture for the traveler by identifying sites/locations the byway corridor management plan has determined as worthy for visitation.
This is a good example because it:
- Describes how the project will be implemented consistent with the information provided in the Budget/Cost Breakdown and Work Plan
- Identifies the interpretive needs specific to each byway
- Describes what the benefit to the byway traveler will be
- Details how the proposed project will dovetail with prior initiatives in the consistency of the information provided and the appearance of the materials developed
- Specifically details exactly what the proposal will fund in a numbered list by byway
